Influence of Pre- and Post - harvest Treatments on the Occurrence of Skin Browning and Fruit Quality in ¢¥ Niitaka ¢¥ Pears

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the potential factors associated with skin browning observed in the fruits of ¢¥Niitaka¢¥ pears stored at low temperature. Removal of paper bags prior to harvest showed no significant effect on the occurrence of skin browning compared to unremoval control. However, fruits grown without bagging developed much less amount of disorder. Skin browning disorder was not induced at ambient temperature but fain discoloration symptom was observed. Prestorage conditioning such as field stacking under shade for 1-2 weeks was greatly effective on prevention of skin browning. The effect of ethylene scrubber was not confirmed. High temperature treatment (43¡É, 4 hours) also effectively inhibited skin browning disorder but fruit developed flesh and/or core browning.
